Kotas, Kenneth J.

Kenneth J. Kotas was born and grew up in Milligan, NE, the son of Yvonne and Adolph Kotas. His favorite memories were of his grandfather’s store in Milligan and of summers spent with his cousins who visited each year from Colorado.

Ken made lifelong friends while in college at UNL. After receiving his bachelor’s degree, he spent one year in St. Louis working with Legal Aid as a VISTA volunteer. When he returned to Lincoln, Ken worked at the Regional Center before being hired at the Lincoln-Lancaster Mental Health Center where he worked for almost 33 years.

Ken loved blues and soul music and attended Jazzfest in New Orleans for many years. He especially enjoyed listening to blues at the Zoo Bar and was a guest DJ on KZUM several times, often introducing listeners to musicians they hadn’t heard before. For years Ken played bridge regularly with a group of friends, displaying a surprisingly competitive spirit. Ken was an avid collector of antiques, especially items that related to his grandfather’s store. He was a passionate believer in giving generously to charities and other worthy organizations.

Ken will be missed by his family and many, many friends. Survived by his wife, Kate Mathias and her children & grandson, Jessica Reddick, Jason & Levi Shestak; sisters and their families, Carla (Henry) Lewis, Trevor & Tyler Lewis, Geri (Steve) Kotas Hogroian, Julia Hogroian; all of the Houtsma cousins and families.

A Celebration of Ken’s Life will be 2:00P-5:00P on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at the Zoo Bar, 136 N. 14th, Lincoln 68508.

Memorials are suggested to the Matt Talbot Kitchen.

I worked with Ken at the Regional Center and would run into him at garage sales. I remember his kind care to the patients and his easiness with others.
