Essink, Irvin A.


 

Irvin Essink was born to Dick and Rena Essink on January 23, 1927 in Holland, NE. He was the 7th child of 8 children.  Irvin graduated from Hickman High School in 1944.  He helped work the family farmstead until he was drafted.  He served in the United States Army starting in 1951 and was discharged in 1953.

Post Army he continued to help on the family farm, shortly after his return, he married Erma Marie Prange in 1956 on Valentine‚Äôs Day.  In 1957 they started their family with the arrival of twins Gary and Terry, followed by their son Steven in 1960.  Irvin and Erma then purchased 80 acres west of Holland where they lived.  In addition to farming, Irvin worked briefly at Lincoln Steel, then began a 32 year career at Norris High School in Firth as a custodian and bus driver.

Irvin and Erma both retired in 1998, building a new home in the community of Holland. Irvin actively served many years within the Holland Reformed Church as an Elder, Sunday School Teacher, and freely gave of his time to help in any way he could.

Irvin enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards with friends, gardening, and traveling. He lived a full and rich life and enjoyed sharing stories with others.  Irvin was a man of integrity and honor, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.

Irvin is survived by his wife Erma of 62 years; sons Gary (Debra) Essink of Omaha, Terry (Tami) Essink of Lincoln, Steven (Erika) Essink of Lincoln; grandchildren Chad (Amanda) Essink, Amber (Matt) Bremer, Adam (Olivia) Essink, Troy Essink, Jamie (Sean) Norris, all of Lincoln, Nathan (Annie) Essink of Omaha; great-grandchildren; Landon, Rylee, Reagan, Owen, Paxton, Azaliah; and his sister Evelyn Essink. Irvin is preceded in death by his parents, siblings; Leona, Margaret, John, Richard, Elmer & Donald.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 12, at Holland Reformed Church. Visitation will be 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Sunday, with family present at Butherus, Maser and Love Funeral Home, 211 E. 1st Street, Hickman. Memorials to the Holland Reformed Church.

We knew Irvin and his wife through our years at the Voice covering his family and Norris school, where he was a well liked and appreciated fixture for many years. Our sympathy to the family. A life well lived goes on forever.
