Marie Smith, age 78 years of Lincoln, passed away April 12, 2018.
Marie was born in Vilno, Poland to Mychajlo and Anna Hulewicz on February 4,
1940. She arrived in
the United States in 1951. Attended St. Mary's elementary school, then Elliot
elementary school. In
1953, moved to 12th & B St. Attended Everett Junior High and graduated from
Lincoln High School in
1959. Married loving husband Herbert Smith in 1959. Lived on B St until 1965,
then moved to
Carswell AFB (Ft. Worth) TX. Returned to Lincoln in 1972 while husband was in
Thailand in 1972/73.
Moved to March AFB (Riverside) CA. Raised two sons, William and James, and one
Kathleen. Marie has seven grandchildren; Adam, Kaitlyn, and Jacob Smith, Kayla
and Emily Wood,
Delanie and Johanna Smith, and one great granddaughter Arianna Morgan. Marie was
death by both parents and brother, Basyl Hulewicz. Surviving Marie are husband

Lincoln, NE, Carol
Finfrock, Waynesville, IL, Barb Green, Pekin, IL, and Marge Simon, Cadiz, KY,
numerous nieces and
Marie worked as a paraeducator at Park School from 1977-1983 when she took over
the care of her
aging parents. She worked part time as a judge for the Election Board until
2000. Marie was very
active in Scouting, serving as Den Mother for Cub Scouts and as a Brownie
member for Boy Scouts in Texas, California, and Nebraska. Marie was room mother
for two years at
private school in Fort Worth, TX. Team mother for baseball teams in Texas,
California, and Nebraska.
Marie won Honorable Mention for New Member of the Year in 2004 for the Air Force
Association (AFSA) A982. She was Division 9 Member of the Year 2005 for AFSA
A982, and was
Member of the Year 2006 for AFSA International from Chapter A982. Marie was
active in Disabled
American Veterans (DAV) Auxiliary 7 DAVA. She was on the Board of Trustees and a
VAVS in the DAVA. She has volunteered over 750 hours at the VA Hospital (clinic)
in Lincoln, NE.
Marie belonged to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Cornhusker Club and
the BNSF Alumni
clubs. She was a member of National Association of Retired Veterans and Railway
Marie was loved by all who knew her. Marie will be missed so very much. Marie
was a very loving
and caring lady, wife, grandmother, and great grandmother. We all loved her so
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at
St Mary’s Catholic Church, 1420 K St in Lincoln with Fr Doug Dietrich
celebrating the Mass. Burial will be at Lincoln Memorial Park.
Visitation will be on Monday from 12 noon to 7 pm with the family receiving
friends from 5 pm to 7 pm at Butherus Maser and Love funeral home, 4040 A St.
Rosary will be at 7:00 pm Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to St Mary’s Catholic Church or DAV Auxiliary Chapter 7
